In 1966 “biotechnology” was still a mysterious new word, “Do You Believe in Magic?” was the No. 1 song on the pop charts, and G. Steven Burrill, just graduated from college, joined Ernst & Young. Trained as an accountant but possessing rare levels of skill and judgment in business development, he worked his magic on fledgling biotech accounts and was key to the creation of Cetus, Genentech, Amgen, and other firms that are cornerstones of modern biotechnology.
As one biotech CEO said, “He’s one of the founders of the industry itself.”
In 1994 Steve decided, in his words, to “re-pot” himself, and he created Burrill & Company, a technical and venture investing partner to the life sciences industry with over $950 million under management. He also serves as chairman of the board of Abunda Nutrition, and is a member of the boards of directors of Catalyst Biosciences, Depomed, NewBridge, Novadaq, Proventys, Targacept, and XDx.
Another industry CEO has noted that Steve has a unique ability to “straddle the science and the finance world,” and in our interview Steve offers insightful perspectives on both. We are grateful to him for taking part in this conversation with Slone Partners and our readers..
