Something’s up in Cleveland

Since its heyday in the 1950s Cleveland, Ohio has lost well over half of its population. But if you could graph that decline and turn it upside-down you would have a picture of the growth at Cleveland HeartLab, a clinical laboratory and disease management company that is proud to be part of Cleveland’s turnaround.
Jake Orville moved to the city in 2008 to join the Cleveland Clinic spinoff PrognostiX, and in 2009 he spun off Cleveland HeartLab to market CardioMPO, which is a test for myeloperoxidase (MPO), an enzyme that indicates inflammation in the artery walls of the heart. By offering CardioMPO as a service rather than a kit, and combining it with other identification and treatment tools, Jake created a growth company that expects to double its staff in the next three years.
He says that the Cleveland experience marked the first time in his career that he felt like an entrepreneur. “I don’t think you can become an entrepreneur,” he says. “I think it is in you and is tough to teach.”
