With its groundbreaking gift from Nike Chairman Phil Knight and his wife Penny, the Knight Cancer Institute at the Oregon Health & Science University has $100 million in hand and two goals in mind: major initiatives to deliver personalized cancer therapies, and the recruitment of outstanding talent to the State of Oregon. Slone Partners had the privilege of working with the Knight Cancer Institute in recruiting for the laboratory's Chief Operating Officer. One initiative was the establishment of the OHSU Knight Diagnostic Laboratories, and one talent coup was the recruitment of Marilyn Owens, Ph.D, M.B.A., as the laboratories Chief Operating Officer.
Marilyn brought extensive experience in laboratory creation and management to the Knight Institute. She was previously senior vice president of operations for Caris Life Science, and held senior positions at IMPATH, Genzyme Genetics, and the Nichols Institute.
“The field of personalized medicine is becoming heavily genetic, and therefore the most successful testing operations will have a strong base in genetics,” Marilyn said upon acceptance of the position.
In our interview, Marilyn tells us about the appeal of Oregon, the kind of work that defines the Knight Institute, and tips for preparing for the recruitment experience.
