DANIEL H. FARKAS

Daniel H. Farkas, PhD, HCLD (ABB), CC, MB(ASCP)CM, FACB, has practiced in molecular diagnostics since 1989, having established hospital-based clinical laboratories as Laboratory Director at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J.; Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Mich.; and The Methodist Hospital, Houston, Texas. He has also established a molecular diagnostics reference laboratory, the Center for Molecular Medicine (current; Grand Rapids, Mich.) and worked at two IVD startups; one, Clinical Micro Sensors, was acquired by Motorola in 2000.

Dr. Farkas has dedicated himself to professional volunteerism. He has served the Association for Molecular Pathology (AMP) since before its inception, being named its Leadership Award winner in 2007; he was AMP President in 2003 and will be its Program Committee Chairman in 2012. Dr. Farkas has served on the boards of directors of both the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and the American Board of Bioanalysis (he was the first to be certified in molecular diagnostics by ABB, in 1996).  He is currently AACC’s representative to the American Medical Association Molecular Pathology Coding Workgroup. Dr. Farkas served on three College of American Pathologists (CAP) Committees, notably for nine years on the Molecular Pathology Resource Committee; he is a frequent CAP Laboratory Accreditation Inspector. He has served as a member of and consultant to the FDA Clinical and Molecular Genetics Devices Panel.

Dr. Farkas has been a member of faculties of Michigan State University (MSU, his alma mater at which he is currently a full Professor), Baylor College of Medicine, Weill Medical College of Cornell University, and Beaumont Hospital's Medical Technology program. Dr. Farkas earned a B.S. degree in Microbiology and Public Health from MSU and a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Dr. Farkas has lectured domestically and internationally on molecular diagnostics and laboratory medicine for years and has published widely and often, including three papers in 2010, and his latest book in 2008, “DNA From A to Z and Back Again,” which is now in its fourth edition.
